Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeated his calls for the creation of an European Army which would have at least three million solders, as his country is nearing the fourth anniversary of the Russian invasion.
Speaking to journalists this week, Zelenskyy warned that by 2030, Russia plans to have an army of 2 to 2.5 million soldiers.
“So a European army, while each country keeps its own sovereign forces, must be able to respond. It should be no smaller than 3 million”, Zelenskyy said.
In February of last year, the Ukrainian leader called on European partners to create a new armed force at the Munich Security Conference.
This came amid uncertainty over further US support, in the case of escalation of aggression from Russia.
And as nearly a year has passed, Zelenskyy says that European leaders have taken no steps toward implementing the initiative.
“Maybe now, with all the new challenges, European leaders will take it more seriously”, Zelenskyy added.
He said that the newly created army would not aim to compete with the US and would not require dissolving NATO, while he added that Ukraine could become a cornerstone of such a force.
At a time when his country is currently engaged in a full-scale war, Zelenskyy was pressed on the issue of Greenland and asked whether Ukraine would send troops to the island, if Denmark requested it.
Zelenskyy said that Denmark has so far not made such a request, while he added that his country is currently short on military personnel.
