We now spend more time on apps than watching TV

For the first time ever, we're spending more time on phone apps than they do watching TV.

While it is common knowledge that TV's influence is waning, this is a surprising look at how prevalent apps have become in the modern world. And although the figures used - compiled by Flurry Analytics for the US Department of Labor Statistics - relate to the US, it's safe to say that we are following a similar pattern over here. Whilst TV viewing time has stayed remarkably consistent at an average 168 minutes a day, app-usage has grown for each of the last three years, increasing from just over two hours a day in 2013, to more than three hours this year... The data does not count a mobile phone's web browser as an app, even though it technically is one, for the sake of simplicity. Similarly, Flurry noted that it was difficult to determine how much TV was actively viewed and how much was just on in the background whilst people interacted with apps on their phone. Still, it does seem like apps are increasingly becoming the most common piece of media in our day-to-day lives.
