UK Weather: ‘Blizzard conditions’ and 80mph winds forecast as yellow warning issued

'Keep the wind out because it's not going to be pretty'

With 2022 now in full swing, the UK could see localised blizzard conditions with winds of up to 80mph as a yellow warning is issued. Health Chiefs across the UK have urged people to check on elderly neighbours amid the Met Office's yellow weather warning. Snow and ice may blanket much of the north and northern and eastern Scotland, reports suggest. Tuesday will be "noticeably colder across the whole of the country" with temperature highs at 8C or 9C in the south and around 4C to 5C in Scotland. Despite New Year's Day being historically warm, the cold snap was a "shock to the system" and will seal the country's "exceptionally mild spell" away. "It's going to be colder than we have been used to over the last couple of days and Christmas," said Met Office spokesman Richard Miles. "We are going into a period when temperatures will be dropping quite a bit." In true Game of Thrones fashion, the north is blanketed in yellow weather warnings urging travellers to be safe. Winds of up to 80mph could very well create "localised blizzard conditions", but forecaster Simon Partridge said ski resorts in Cairngorms might see the snow as "good news". He added: "I'm not sure they'll be overly happy about the strength of the wind." While the north battles localised blizzards, Lincolnshire's weather switch is a little more subdued and could see "slushy stuff" in the following days. Patridge said: "It will definitely be colder, so if you're going out, think about an extra layer tomorrow [Tuesday] … you might need anything to keep the wind out because it's not going to be pretty." Come January 5, the west will likely see a "dry, bright day", which will then quickly be dispatched by a "band of rain" come Thursday.
