UK to get three-day working week next year due to bank holiday change

Following the Bank Holidays of April, the next Bank Holiday in the UK this year is on Monday, May 4, shortly followed by the Spring Bank Holiday on Monday, May 25.

But in 2027, the UK is looking at a three-day working week around the Christmas period, with a whopping five days off in a row.

What is more, January 1, 2028, falls on a Saturday, meaning Brits will get a “substitute” day on Monday, January 3.

This means that if you take just two days of annual leave as a worker in Britain, on December 30 and 31 in 2027, you will get a whopping 10 days off from December 25 until January 3.

“If a bank holiday is on a weekend, a ‘substitute’ weekday becomes a bank holiday, normally the following Monday”, the government stated on their website.

“Your employer does not have to give you paid leave on bank or public holidays. Bank holidays might affect how and when your benefits are paid”, it added.
