Two firefighters and a member of the public have died after a fire at an old RAF base in Oxfordshire.

Oxfordshire County Council said that the two firefighters from Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service died after fighting a blaze at Bicester Motion on Thursday.

“Firefighters and Oxfordshire County Council colleagues are today mourning the loss of two firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty while dealing with a major incident in Bicester on the evening of Thursday, 15 May,” Oxfordshire County Council said in a statement.

“A member of the public also sadly died in the incident.

“Two further firefighters sustained serious injuries and are currently in hospital.

“Ten fire crews attended the incident at Bicester Motion having been called to the scene at 18:39. Four crews remain at the scene with the fire now under control.”

Rob MacDougall, Chief Fire Officer, issued a statement: “It is with a very heavy heart that we today report the loss of two of our firefighters. Families have been informed and are being supported. Our thoughts are with them at this most difficult of times and we ask for privacy to be respected.”

He added that they cannot give any further details at the minute.

The fire is reportedly ongoing but is under control now.

A hydraulic platform, a water carrier, a command unit and a high volume pumping unit are all on the scene still.
