The Inbetweeners are making their long awaited return

The comedy originally aired on E4 between 2008 and 2010, following four suburban teenagers as they attempted to survive school, friendships, hormones and the increasingly embarrassing situations they somehow managed to create for themselves. 

Created and written by Damon Beesley, the series was designed as a more realistic and comedic alternative to darker teen dramas such as Skins, focusing on everything from uncaring teachers and lad culture to the awkwardness of growing up.

The show quickly became a major success, eventually winning the Audience Award at the 2010 British Academy Television Awards, before receiving the Outstanding Contribution to British Comedy award at the 2011 British Comedy Awards.

Its popularity also led to two successful films, with The Inbetweeners Movie arriving in 2011 and The Inbetweeners 2 following in 2014. Together, the films made more than £100 million at the worldwide box office and broke records for British comedy films.

Now, more than a decade after the second film, the story is continuing. Creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris first confirmed in October 2025 that the Channel 4 sitcom would be returning in some form, and it has now been confirmed that the next chapter will come as a third film for Netflix, bringing the original cast back for another round of chaos.

One familiar face is still missing from the reunion

The original four are all set to return for the new film, with Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley and Blake Harrison reprising their roles as Will, Simon, Jay and Neil.

There is still one familiar face whose involvement has not been confirmed, though. Emily Atack, who played Simon’s long-time crush Charlotte Hinchcliffe and has since starred in Rivals, has yet to reveal whether she will be joining the cast.

According to reports, the producers are keen to bring her back and have reportedly viewed Atack as “one of the missing pieces” they still want to secure for the project.

The new Inbetweeners film won’t be playing it safe

Production on the third film is set to get underway on Monday, September 7, with the team reportedly working towards a release in 2027. 

The new instalment has been written and directed by creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, and its return also appears to have the backing of James Buckley, who has previously made it clear that he does not want the comedy toned down for modern audiences.

Speaking in February, Buckley said there was clearly still an appetite for another Inbetweeners film, but stressed that the franchise would only work if it kept the crude and ridiculous humour that made it so popular in the first place.

“I think the temperature at the moment is that people would like an Inbetweeners,” he said. “It would release some sort of pressure. Just make sure we keep all that silly, disgusting humour. That’s what I assume people would want.”

After all, nobody is coming back to The Inbetweeners for polite, sensible comedy. Let’s just hope this reunion goes better than the last one, which Buckley has previously admitted was a “mistake”.
