Lake Ontario wasn’t enough – Donald Trump now wants to rename an entire state of America

While ICE terrorise the streets, Flock cameras (allegedly) falsely accuse the public of crimes, and the US President continues to buy up thousands of stocks, Trump is tackling the important stuff - renaming every single part of America.

He's already attempted to rename iconic locations such as the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and Lake Ontario to Lake America with the likes of Google and Apple enjoying the taste of boot as they went about swiftly changing the names on their mapping services in the US.

While Trump did try and push these changes through with executive orders, both of these locations are shared with other countries, and the international community weren't too impressed either, choosing not to take up the change.

However, Trump has a new target in his sights, and this one is entirely inside the US, although he now faces a different hurdle.

The US President has suggested, on multiple occasions now, renaming the historic state of New Mexico as 'New America' - yes genuinely.

In a post to Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Many people suggested changing the name of New Mexico, one of the great vote cheating states of all time, to NEW AMERICA.

“So much more prestigious and beautiful for the people of that potentially incredible State. Wow, I Love It!!!”

The big issue

While Trump is trying to do his best dictator impression, thanks to bureaucracy, he legally doesn't even have the power to enact such a change.

While executive orders can be used to rename bodies of water or other geographic features, the job of president doesn't come with the powers to rename states.

The move would likely require action by the state and Congress, although, Trump could still force government agencies to refer to the state as New America.

Where does the name New Mexico come from

Not only is Trump trying to erase the name of a state, he's trying to erase history too.

The name of New Mexico actually predates the country of Mexico, so in a way, it's Old Mexico.

The area was named by Spanish explorers in the late 16th century who named it Nuevo México (New Mexico).

They named it after the Aztec heartland in the Valley of Mexico.

In fact, the name New Mexico is older than the United States itself as a country.
