Met Office issues thunderstorms warning

The warning is in place for most of Wednesday

The Met Office has issued an yellow weather warning for thunderstorms and heavy rain for parts of England on Wednesday afternoon.

The warning covers large parts of the South East, the West country, Eastern England and the Midlands and runs from 1pm to 9pm.

There is a chance that the weather will disrupt trains and bus services because of possible flooding and lighting. People are urged to check their journeys before travelling.

The amber weather warning is in place from 1pm until 9pm on Wednesday, July 20 (Met Office)

The Met Office says: “Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

“There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.”

In areas that see isolated heavy downpours, there could be as much as 20-30mm of rain in an hour and 50 mm in three hours.

The yellow warning comes the day after the forecaster’s red weather warning for heat comes to an end.

This is currently in place across almost all of England and much of Wales for Tuesday when temperatures are set to reach record-breaking levels, with the mercury on course to hit 40C for the first time ever in the UK.
