Three-year-old girl dies after tram collides with van in Manchester city centre

It's believed that officers are yet to locate the van driver involved in the crash.

The incident occurred shortly after 9:30am this morning on Mosley Street, close to St Peter's Square.

It is understood that the child was walking on Mosley Street when she was hit by the van as the vehicle rebounded from its crash with a Metrolink tram.

North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) said two air ambulance crews attended the scene and the girl was taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short while later.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson told ITV News: "Emergency services are responding to reports of a collision involving a tram and a van in Manchester city centre.

"A three-year-old girl was taken to hospital and has sadly passed away from her injuries. No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing."

Pictures from the scene, shared on social media by Manchester Evening News reporter, Nicole Wootton-Cane, appeared to show the white van mounted on the pavement.

The Manchester Evening News claimed that the van driver involved in the crash left the scene.

Enquiries into the collision are ongoing as officers are yet to locate the van driver involved in the crash, as per the MEN.

Police and Metrolink workers have been in attendance at the scene since this morning, and roads close to the scene have remained close for much of the day.

Some public transport services were cancelled following the collision, and severe delays remain across much of the Metrolink network.

A statement given to BBC News by Manchester City Council said: "All of Manchester is horrified at this shocking crash.

"All our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of this innocent little girl."
