The Barbie movie is ending relationships

Joseph Loftus

I’m a Barbie girl, in a single world.

Well, well, well, it looks like the Barbie movie might not be a great date night after all, with numerous moviegoers revealing that the film ended their relationships, for better or for worse.

Just a week on from the epic Barbenheimer weekend, Barbie has grossed more than $775 million globally.

However one unsuspected side effect from watching the movie appears to be countless break-ups as many women claim the Margot Robbie hit made them deeply reconsider their relationships.

Taking to the popular subreddit, AITA, one woman wrote: “AITA for breaking up with my boyfriend over the Barbie movie?”

The woman then shared her story about watching the movie with her then boyfriend who complained about the film’s feminist themes and said the overall message of the film left him upset, angry, and offended.

The anonymous woman claims that the film was ‘the straw that broke the camels back’ and ended their relationship saying she was on a ‘girl-power high’ after the viewing.

And this is not the only incident.

Another woman on TikTok said that Gerwig’s immediate classic inspired her to break up with her boyfriend saying: “Thank you, ‘Barbie’ for empowering me, for giving me the confidence, for making me realize I deserve better.”

A third woman, Theresa Azrate, also called it quits with her boyfriend, explaining to the HuffPost that the movie highlighted how differently her and her boyfriend viewed the world.

She said: “I was so invested in the movie that I really didn’t even recognize how he was perceiving it until he asked, ‘Are you crying?’ two of three times throughout.”

She explained that after the film they realised that they were not on the same wavelength and that it wasn’t worth arguing about which gender has a ‘tougher time going through life’.

Another woman shared to TikTok a story about her break-up saying that Barbie gave her the power to end her toxic relationship.

Other people on TikTok are also claiming that asking men “What did you think of Barbie?” is a great test of character.

Men who enjoyed the movie or sympathised with their girlfriends or wives after seeing it passed the test. Men who felt strongly against the film failed the test.

So what did you think of Barbie?
