A Spanish goalkeeper has been praised on social media after he publicly came out as gay following his club’s promotion.

Alberto Lejaragga celebrated Marbella FC’s success by kissing his boyfriend, posting a photo of the celebrations shortly after the final whistle with the caption: “Many thanks for always being at my side, in the good moments and in the not so good moments.

“This time it was our turn to experience the beauty of this.”

The 28-year-old also shared photos of his family alongside the pictures of his boyfriend after winning promotion Spain’s fourth-tier Segunda RFEF division thanks to a 1-0 win against Real Jean.

His public announcement led to a wave of positive comments who praised the ‘keeper for his bravery.

“A wonderful triumph and very much deserved,” wrote one person.

Another tweeted: “You deserve all the good things your future holds and you will always be supported by the people who truly love you.”

A third said: “Such a necessarily normal photo that it moves you.”

Lejaragga follows in the footsteps of the likes of Josh Cavallo, Jake Daniels and Jakub Jankto who have all publicly come out in the last two years.

Jankto made his announcement public in February, saying: “Hi, I’m Jakub Jankto. Like everybody else, I have my strengths. I have my weaknesses. I have a family. I have my friends. I have a job which I have been doing it as best as I can, for years, with seriousness, professionalism and passion.

“Like everybody else, I also want to live my life in freedom. Without fears. Without prejudice. Without violence. BUT with love.

“I am homosexual and I no longer want to hide myself.”
