Sandro Tonali was reportedly left in tears after being told by AC Milan that they had plans to sell him.
Tonali looks set to depart the San Siro and make the move to Newcastle United this summer, who identified him as one of their main targets.
Fabrizio Romano has said that the midfielder will sign a six-year deal at St James' Park for £59m plus add ons.
But while there may be excitement amongst Newcastle fans at the prospect of adding a top talent to their ranks, Italian media outlet La Repubblica have suggested that Tonali isn't as keen on the move himself.
They claim that the 21-year-old is desperate to stay at his boyhood AC Milan and "broke down in tears" after the Rossoneri told him they wanted to sell him in order to raise funds for transfers of their own.
Back in 2019, Tonali expressed his love for Milan. "My father is a Milanista, while my mother and my uncle are Interisti," he said. "As a child, I went crazy for the Milan colors and my idol was Gattuso," he said.
Speaking about the prospective move, Tonali's agent Giuseppe Riso said: "This is an excellent deal, Newcastle is the perfect project for Tonali. Newcastle wanted Sandro as key signing at all costs.
"He will be a crucial player for the Magpies. This deal also helps AC Milan and Brescia’s finances a lot."
The Italy international has played 130 times - 48 of those coming this season - for Milan and helped them to achieve their first Scudetto in 11 years and the Champions League semi final last season.
