The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon
A rainbow appeared over the grounds of Buckingham Palace this afternoon shortly before it was announced that the Queen had passed away.
The Royal Family sent out a statement at 18.30 BMT saying Elizabeth II had died peacefully at Balmoral in Scotland.
Earlier on Thursday, the Palace announced that Her Majesty was under medical supervision at Balmoral after doctors became concerned.
The palace said in a statement: “Following further evaluation this morning, The Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision.
“The Queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral.”
Reporting from outside Buckingham Palace, the Daily Mirror‘s Andy Lines recorded a rainbow appearing near the Queen’s official residence.
It was a poignant moment for the crowds who had assembled outside the gates.
A 10-day mourning period will now begin across the nation, with a national minute’s silence set to take place later today.
