Police in Dubai aided in the extradition

Former Ajax winger and Netherlands international Quincey Promes has been extradited to the Netherlands to serve more than seven years in prison.

Promes made 50 appearances for the Netherlands, but has been playing out in Dubai following a call for extradition from Dutch authorities.

He was first sentenced to six years in prison in February 2024 for his involvement in smuggling over a tonne of cocaine from Belgium into the Netherlands.

It is reported that he was willing to return to his native country to appeal and cooperate with his trial.

Prosecutors say Dubai authorities were ready to extradite him anyway.

He also received an 18-month sentence in absentia for stabbing a cousin in the knee during a 2020 incident.

Promes denies all charges and has filed appeals in both cases.

The Dutchman spent seven years playing for Spartak Moscow over two stints while also playing for Ajax and Sevilla.

It is yet to be determined where Promes will serve his sentence in the Netherlands.
