The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that a full counter-terrorism investigation is under way following the events at Westminster on Wednesday afternoon.

Briefing reporters at New Scotland Yard, Commander BJ Harrington read a statement on behalf of the MPS, detailing how officers responded to an incident in the area of Parliament Square. The statement also makes clear that the Senior National Coordinator declared this a terrorist incident.

At least one person has died and several others have been critically injured after a car hit people on Westminster Bridge. Reports have since claimed that the alleged assailant was shot by armed police after stabbing an officer outside the Houses of Parliament.

Westminster remains on lockdown following the incident, with MPS asking members of the public to avoid travelling to areas including Parliament Square, Whitehall, Westminster Bridge, Lambeth Bridge and areas of Victoria Street.
