Police officer stabbed in chest at high-security UK prison

He had been visiting from an outside force

The incident took place at Frankland Prison, a category A prison in Durham.

Durham Police said the officer, who had been visiting the prison from an outside force, is "conscious and talking" in hospital after the incident, Sky News reports.

A spokesman for Durham Police said: "Shortly after 11am this morning, Durham Constabulary were called to an incident at HMP Frankland in Durham City.

"A police officer, who was visiting the facility from an outside force, suffered a stab wound to the chest during the incident.

"The injured officer has been taken to hospital by ambulance, where he is described as being 'conscious and talking'."

As a category A men's jail, HMP Frankland has the highest level of security possible. It holds more tha 800 inmates.
