Plane crashes near supermarket in Portugal

A small Swiss-registered plane has crashed in Portugal, killing five people.

The aircraft crashed near a Lidl supermarket in Tires, situated near the Portuguese capital of Lisbon. According to media in the country, the five dead include the pilot and three passengers as well as the driver of a lorry which was hit by the plane.

Reports also claim that three of those killed were French with one Swiss.

The plane had crashed shortly after taking off from a local airfield, with Marseille said to have been its intended destination.

The cause of the crash is still unknown.

Amateur footage shows the aftermath of the crash, with thick smoke seen billowing from the site.
