Petition calling for immediate UK General Election passes one million signatures in under 24 hours

A torrid start in office for Starmer

Keir Starmer’s start in office continues to get rockier as support for the new primer minister wains only four months into Labour’s new tenure.

Starmer was elected into office in July after the Conservatives were ousted following a fourteen year period in power, beckoning in a new era of British politics.

The big news in recent weeks has been the development of the war in Ukraine, with UK supplied missiles being launched into Russia for the first time ever, with the permission of Starmer.

As well as potentially dragging the UK into hostilities with Russia, Starmer has been accused of not having a clear plan or identity in how he intends on leading the nation as well as having gone back on promises made during his election campaign.

Now, over a million people have voiced their discontent with the PM as they signed an official petition to oust the Labour party and call another general election.

The petition notice read: “I would like there to be another general election.”

“I believe the current Labour government have gone back on their promises they laid out in the lead up to the last election.”

The current number of signatures at the time of writing stands at 1,158,569.

All petitions that reach 100,000 signatures must be discussed in parliament, meaning at some point Starmer’s premiership and the number of angry signees will be brought to light in the House of Commons.

With just under 10 million people voting Labour into power in July, this petition already represents over a tenth of that same number.

It is unlikely this petition will lead to serious change as that would compromise the democratic authority of the general election, however, it is certainly possible to have an impact on Starmer and his party.
