‘We ask the public not to speculate about the case’

A murder investigation has been launched in Rossington, Doncaster, after a shopping bag was found containing the corpse of a frozen baby.

Police have confirmed that a 17-year-old girl and a 45-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of murder following the gut-wrenching discovery.

Emergency services arrived at 12:15pm on December 16, where they pronounced the baby dead at the scene.

Temporary Superintendent Jamie Henderson said: “This is an extremely tragic case and I know the local community, and those further afield, will be very upset to hear about what has happened.

“At this time, our investigation into the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death is in the very early stages and we ask the public not to speculate about the case.

“There is a cordon in place on Norman Crescent in the Rossington area while our officers carry out their work, and therefore we are asking members of the public to avoid the area at this time.”

The baby was found by retail worker Darnell Jackson, 23, who said he found the victim wrapped in a Heron Foods bag on Thursday.

Jackson told Yorkshire Live that he was “Shocked and speechless”.

He said: “I work at the local supermarket Herons just across from our house and I recognised the bag immediately.

“I left then as I couldn’t stay in the house and I had a cigarette in the garden to calm my nerves. I felt physically sick and waited for the police to arrive.”

No other police statements have been made as of yet.
