‘Extremely significant’ car bomb intercepted near Northern Irish border by police

Police stopped the car on Wednesday which was believed to be heading to Northern Ireland

Gardai were investigating dissident republican activity and the car is believed to have been headed to the north.

Following the vehicle stop, An Garda Síochána requested assistance from the Irish Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.

The EOD team completed an examination of the vehicle and made the device safe.

The official outcome is not being released for operational reasons.

A woman in her 20s, the driver of the vehicle, was arrested.

A man in his 40s has since been arrested in connection with the investigation, and is being held in Dublin.

Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly said officers found an explosive device and described it as an "extremely significant seizure".

The stop happened on Wednesday, with Gardai just now making the news public.
