It could help you keep your house warm in the coming months

The Met Office has advised Brits to shut their curtains around 4pm each day to help fight the cold of autumn and winter.

Whilst the UK looks set to bask in some mid-September sun this week, it won’t be too long before the nights draw in and we start reaching for the hoodies and blankets.

And with energy prices predicted to soar next month, many of you will be looking for ways to stay warm without having the heating on too much and burning a hole in your pocket.

Luckily, the Met Office has some rather handy tips on how to combat the cold over the coming months.

This includes advice for people to shut their curtains, to help retain heat in rooms.

Their advice reads: “Draw your curtains at dusk to help keep the heat generated inside your rooms.”

After the clocks go back in October, dusk will be around 4pm each day.

The Met Office recommends that the temperature in your home should be at least 18C, especially for over 65s or people with health conditions who may be at risk from the cold.

Other tips from the forecaster include checking your home is properly insulated, making sure radiators aren’t obstructed by curtains or furniture and fitting draught proofing to seal any gaps around windows and doors.

When it comes to keeping your home warm in winter, there’s often debate over when to turn your heating on and how long to keep it on for.

Experts have previously explained what the best practices are, and have also debunked the theory that you should have your heating on all day but on low temperature.
