Met Office warns British households to ‘unplug appliances and landline’

The good weather has come to an end

The Met Office has put out a stark warning to UK households as storms are forecast for the next few days.

Like all good things, the heatwave and sunny weather are set to come to an end later this week as thunder and lightning is set to strike several areas of the UK.

The Met Office has urged people to unplug appliances and has encouraged Brits to keep an emergency kit close by as heavy rain and thunderstorms hit.

It warned against using the landline during the storms and said to unplug non-essential appliances due to the potential risk of power surges.

It said: “Lightning can cause power surges, unplug any non-essential appliances if not already using a surge protector.

“Seek shelter if possible. When you hear thunder you are already within range of where the next ground flash may occur, lightning can strike as far as 10 miles away from the centre of a storm.”

Parts of the UK have reached highs of 30 degrees in recent days.

The Met Office said: “Telephone lines can conduct electricity so try to avoid using the landline, unless in an emergency.

“If outside avoid water and find a low-lying open place that is a safe distance from trees, poles or metal objects.

“If you find yourself in an exposed location it may be advisable to squat close to the ground, with hands on knees and with head tucked between them.

“Try to touch as little of the ground with your body as possible, do not lie down on the ground.

“If you feel your hair stand on end, drop to the above position immediately.”

If you experience a power cut you should call 105 to report it, not your energy supplier.
