A full investigation has been launched
Intense footage shows the moment an enormous superyacht sank off the coast of southern Italy, with the Italian coastguard rescuing nine people from the sinking ship.
Superyacht My Saga was crossing the Gulf of Squillace on Saturday (August 20) in the hopes of continuing on to Milazzo on the island of Sicily. However disaster struck and the boat began to sink just nine miles from shore.
Footage captured during the ordeal shows the yacht at a 45-degree angle with waves crashing all around it. Mere seconds later, only the bow is left poking out. Local outlet Catanzaro Informa reported that a tug boat arrived to assist, hoping to tow the yacht towards the only port big enough to house it in Crotone.
Nei giorni scorsi, la #GuardiaCostiera di #Crotone ha coordinato operazioni di salvataggio di passeggeri ed equipaggio di uno yacht di 40m, affondato a 9 miglia al largo di #CatanzaroMarina.

Unfortunately, due to “difficult weather conditions” and the angle of the boat, My Saga could not be saved and sank in a “very short time.”
The yacht’s all-Italian crew was rescued and returned to shore safely.
The tense video was posted by the Guardia Costiera on Twitter, where they also issued a statement in Italian.
“In recent days, the Guardia Costiera of Crotone coordinated the rescue operations of passengers and crew of a 40m yacht, which sank 9 miles offshore of Catanzaro Marina,” the translation reads. “Administrative investigation launched to identify the causes.”
Reacting to the clip, one Twitter user wrote: “How??? Why!??!”
“What crazy stuff!!” wrote another.
The cause of the sinking is still not known but the local maritime office has launched an investigation in the hopes of uncovering the fault.
