It’s safe to say that Manchester hasn’t exactly welcomed the 2015 Conservative Party Conference with open arms this week.
An estimated 60,000 people have joined anti-austerity protests, with dissenters voicing opposition to policies ranging from NHS reforms to restrictions on trade unions.
Indeed such is the local disdain for politicians of the blue persuasion (all 96 Manchester city council seats are held by Labour), that Tories have been advised to hide their official conference lanyards when out and about.
Unfortunately for Boris Johnson, lanyard or no lanyard, his trademark blonde shock of hair makes him instantly noticeable. It also makes him something of a target.
The London Mayor was pelted with colourful plastic balls, and even beach blow-ups, by disabled protestors unhappy at benefit cuts. He didn’t seem especially surprised by his reception…
