Major US airport closed after Amazon cargo plane overshoots runway hitting multiple vehicles

'Multiple patients' are being treated at the scene.

The incident happened this evening (Sunday, 6 September) at Miami International Airport at around 2pm local time (7pm BST).

The aircraft in question is a Boeing 767-300 cargo plane operating for Amazon's Prime Air.

It departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico and had Miami as its destination.

Images circulating online show the aircraft beyond a road and tilted downwards.

The incident has caused the FAA to implement a ground stop, effectively shutting down the airport.

The airport said in a statement: "At approximately 2 p.m. today, Prime Air flight 7598 overran Miami International Airport’s diagonal runway and is disabled at the northwest end of the airport.

"All runways and taxiways at [Miami International Airport] are currently closed as of 3pm and a ground stop is in effect."

As per CBS News, the plane hit multiple vehicles and that there are multiple patients at the scene.
