Here's how the prices can vary

As hostilities in the Middle East have resumed, fears of a fuel spike have reignited again, as per latest reports.

Amid fears of a spike, RAC looked at the brands offering the cheapest petrol prices right now, which can vary by as much as 62.3p between the lowest and highest per litre offer.

Usually, supermarkets are cheaper than big fuel brands, and of the cheapest brands you're most likely to find a nearby Tesco pump, which has the fifth largest number of forecourts, followed by Asda.

In the meantime, Ukrainian attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure have prompted Moscow to ban diesel exports this week.

Typically, Russia is Europe’s largest producer of oil, and the country is now suffering fuel shortages across its vast land mass and rationing has failed to prevent huge queues.

Following the latest developments, Russia is now planning to import diesel to help offset some of the losses.

However, that will only drive up competition for supplies across the rest of the continent in the weeks and months to come.

Given that the UK imports more than half of its diesel needs, that signals upwards pressure on prices.
