The prime minister said we should help people with the cost of living

In his annual Christmas message, Sir Keir Starmer has said that we should each “do our bit”, as he recognised that the cost of living is what many people are struggling with across the country.

The UK Prime Minister, in his 2025 Christmas message said that “it's a time to celebrate the Christmas story and to cherish the Christian values that define it.”

In the message, Starmer added that helping families with the cost of living is his “priority” and that “we should each do our bit” to help those who are lonely or struggling this festive season.

Starmer’s message comes one month after Chancellor Rachel Reeves delivered her controversial second Autumn Budget, announcing major changes to tax, benefits and pensions. Scrapping the two child benefit cap in her plans to try and “ease the cost of living”, was one of Reeves' major changes.

Keir Starmer's 2025 Christmas message, in full:

“It's a truly special time of year. And it's a time to remind ourselves what's really important. Family. Friends. Community. It's a time to celebrate the Christmas story and to cherish the Christian values that define it. Peace. Charity and goodwill to all. That is the promise of the season.

I'd like to wish the whole country a very happy Christmas. Right now, all across the UK, people are traveling home to be with their loved ones. Children are bursting with excitement. Families are making the final preparations. Wrapping presents. Hanging stockings. Rushing out for last minute bits.

It's a truly special time of year. And it's a time to remind ourselves what's really important. Family. Friends. Community. It's a time to celebrate the Christmas story and to cherish the Christian values that define it. Peace. Charity and goodwill to all. That is the promise of the season.

And just as so many put their feet up, some truly special people will be pulling on their uniforms and heading out to work. Our NHS staff emergency services and the brave men and women of our armed forces all playing their part, doing their bit to care for the nation and to keep us safe.”
