Karen Matthews has admitted that she fears for her life after the recent screening of The Moorside.

The two-part BBC drama, which tells the story of the fake kidnap of Karen’s daughter Shannon, aired this week and was watched by seven million people.

Karen, who protests her innocence, has since been bombarded with death threats since the show was broadcast. According to the Mirror, she has recently told a friend that she has been left too scared to leave the house.

“I cannot go out of the door. I’m frightened out of my life. I’m shaking like a leaf. I’m shit scared to even get any shopping or anything.

“I know I can’t stop it but why does it have to be dragged up again? Why don’t they just leave me alone and let me get on with my life?

“I’m worried I’ll have my windows smashed right now. I’m too scared to go anywhere. I feel isolated. If I could go back I would ask the police to reinvestigate everything… the truth’s going to come out.”

Matthews served half of a four-year jail sentence after she was found to have staged the abduction of her daughter in what is believed to have been an attempt to receive reward money for Shannon’s safe return.
