The actor says he has “spent too long in Middle-earth
Hugo Weaving, the actor famous for portraying Elrond the half-elven in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, has said he refuses to watch the Rings of Power series.
The famous British actor expressed his disinterest in the rebooted franchise in a chat with the Radio Times, revealing he hasn’t watched as much as a second of the show.
Who can blame him as well, the Lord of the Rings trilogy took up years of the actor’s career becoming synonymous with a character that spent his entire on screen life stood stoically dishing out words of wisdom to all who frequent Rivendell.
He was the furthest from the action, so it’s no surprise he doesn’t fancy watching the rest of the cast enjoy exciting adventures across Middle-earth.
Weaving said he hasn’t even had the interest to check out Robert Aramayo’s portrayal of the younger Elrond.
In his interview the 64-year-old actor admitted he has “spent too long in Middle-earth” and doesn’t “particularly want to go back there”.
This may come as a surprise for fans of the fantasy franchise based on the books by J.R.R. Tolkien, however, Weaving believes that this may be due to how he perceives the character compared to fans.
Weaving explained that his time as Elrond was “in a funny way, not a role that I think of with the same sort of stature in my head as it might do for fans”.
While Weaving is looking to avoid the Rings of Power show, Sir Ian McKellen is actively looking to get back involved in the franchise, making it clear that he is the only one to play Gandalf the wizard ahead of a new Lord of the Rings film set for 2026.
The 85-year-old actor said: “I’m not letting anyone else put on the pointy hat and beard if I can help it.”
Weaving is not alone as an actor reluctant to watch films or series they have starred in with the difference potentially coming down to the fact that these actors have lived the film rather than just watched it.

One of these is Emma Stone who revealed that she has never watched her popular film Easy A in full.
She said: “I haven’t seen it. No, I’ve seen some scenes. But I went to a friends and family screening to see it, and I had to get up and walk out. Who wants to watch themselves for that long?” she confessed.
Another huge name who refuses to watch himself on the big screen is Tom Hanks, star of countless classic films.
He explained: “Because you never learn what to do. You only sort of learn what not to do. The thing about looking at the old movies is that they don’t change.”
It’s some sound reasoning from one of the world’s most famous actors, but Tom Hanks being one of the few people out there to have never watched Forest Gump or Castaway would be very surprising!
