Red Bull are bringing their Air Race to London for an event that’s sure to be a summer highlight.

One of the fastest motorsports on the planet, the Air Race sees pilots fly high performance planes to navigate an impressive aerial racetrack.

Set the fastest lap, avoid as many penalties as possible and win the stage.

A riveting action adventure, an superb stunt show and a great day out all rolled into one, here’s everything you need to know about the event before it rolls into town.

This is the fifth race of the season

Like with many motorsports, the Red Bull Air Race sees its competitors travel around the world, testing their skills in different locales. London sees the start of the second half of the season, as pilots crack on with their tilt for the title.

It’s running from August 13-14th

This August’s London stage will see the Air Race come to London on the weekend of 13-14th. Peak “summer” conditions, but knowing the British weather, nothing is guaranteed.

This August’s event will be held at Royal Ascot

For the fourth year in a row, the Air Race will return to Ascot racecourse.  Ascot’s course is said to be one of the tricker of the Air Race season as pilots start their lap from a standing start – beginning from  the runway instead of a Start Gate like in other locations. With a devious chicane right after Gate 3 and pilots experiencing up to 8Gs from the start of their flights, expect a lot of shenanigans when come race time.

The Brits will be represented by a former champion

2014 Air Race champion Nigel Lamb is representing the United Kingdom for this year’s season. Currently sixth in the world rankings, Nigel is looking to make a late charge up the table in the second half of the season. Here’s hoping.

(You can read Nigel’s account of the scariest moment in his professional career here).

And it’s not just about the high-flying action!
