The crash incited a fire on the island shortly after

Alexander Cromie and Marie Ebert were reported to have died near the helicopter, traveling from Athens to the island of Sifnos.

The couple were enjoying their honeymoon, according to greek newspaper Kathimerini.

Aboard was pilot Gioros Raikos, a former Greek Air Force pilot, who transported the couple when the helicopter crash occurred.

Gioros is said to have died in the crash as well.

“It (the helicopter) experienced mechanical failure in the air; residents say it made a loud, strange noise, like military aircraft,” Sifnos Deputy Mayor, Manolis Fountoulakis, told local news.

A large fire took ablaze following the crash, sparking an island-wide alarm. However, no further casualties have been reported.

Sifnos mayor Maria Nadali said: “This is a shocking event.

“We are shocked and are trying to manage, together with the right services, the consequences of this incident next to the helipad.”

Alexander, Marie and pilot Gioros’ crash comes almost two weeks after another helicopter crash in Greece.

Two helicopters collided mid-air in the efforts taken to tackle wildfires in the Psatha region, on the Gulf of Corinth west of Athens.

Of the four people involved, two died in the colliding accident. A Danish pilot and a Greek firefighter.

The two others involved in the accident, a British pilot and a Greek crew member, were promptly rushed to a nearby hospital.
