The girl was found in Fountain Lane around 6.20pm

A nine-year-old girl was killed in a suspected stabbing in a market town overnight in what has been described as a “profoundly shocking” event.

The youngster, who has not yet been identified, was found on Fountain Lane in Boston, Lincolnshire, around 6.20pm.

Lincolnshire Police announced Friday morning that two people had been arrested over the stabbing after earlier saying a murder investigation had been launched.

An area in the quiet laneway, in an industrial area, has been cordoned off and officers expect to be there “for the foreseeable future”.

The victim’s family has been informed of her death.

No other details have been released about the incident.

Matt Warman MP, for Boston and Skegness, encouraged anyone with information to contact police over the “profoundly shocking” incident.

“My thoughts are with the family of the girl involved – if you have any information that might help the police with their ongoing investigation please use the contact details below.

“I have spoken to senior officers locally and am hugely grateful for all the emergency services’ work.”

Local residents have told of their shock and fear, with one telling The Sun: “This is beyond a parent’s worst nightmare.”

Another added: “What a tragic waste of a young girl’s life. “Heartbreaking for her family.”
