English singer-songwriter and guitarist Dave Mason has died at the age of 79.
A statement read: “On behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of Dave Mason”.
“Dave Mason lived a remarkable life devoted to the music and people he loved.”
The rock musician helped define a generation of classic rock, after coming to prominence in 1967 as a founding member of the rock band Traffic.
In September 2024, Mason forced to cancel a tour after a “serious heart condition” was discovered during a routine appointment.
However, no cause of death has yet been revealed.
At the time, a statement read: “We are sorry to inform you Dave Mason has a serious heart condition detected in a routine appointment that requires immediate attention. His team of doctors has advised against all tour activity, and therefore we have canceled his Fall tour.”
After founding rock band Traffic, the Worcester-born musician wrote and sang lead vocals on two of the band's most famous songs, “Hole in My Shoe” and “Feelin' Alright?”.
Following his departure from the band, he pursued a solo career and recorded with artists including George Harrison, the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney and Wings and Michael Jackson.
He also moved in and around some of rock’s most iconic circles, including collaborations and touring connections with members of Fleetwood Mac, across his long career.
Mason showed an early affinity for music, picking up the guitar as a teenager and quickly immersing himself in the burgeoning British rock scene.
In 2004 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Traffic, cementing his place in rock history.
