EasyJet flight bound for UK forced to make emergency landing

The flight had to make a diversion

The holiday flight was travelling from Cyprus to Bristol, however, had to make an emergency landing yesterday (15 June) in the Turkish city of Izmir.

The Airbus A320 had reached cruise altitude after departing Paphos when the alarm was raised concerning smoke in the cabin.

According to flight tracker Air Live, the aircraft “suddenly turned around to the west of Turkey and started its descent”.

Meanwhile on flightradar 24, the plane could be seen turning away from its pre-planned route to head to the Turkish coast.

The pilot subsequently made the decision to divert to Turkey.

A spokesperson for the airline confirmed the flight had to be diverted due to a technical issue leading to a smell of smoke on board.

They added the aircraft landed safely and was met by precautionary emergency services.

Passengers were given hotel accommodation and meals in Turkey.

The spokesperson added: "The safety of our customers and crew is EasyJet's highest priority and EasyJet operates its fleet of aircraft in strict compliance with all manufacturers' guidelines," they continued."

A replacement aircraft will complete the journey to Bristol later today, they said.
