Cyprus hijack hostage situation is over; ‘It was all about a woman’

Nooruddean Choudry

Thankfully, the siege situation on aircraft EgyptAir MS181 has come to an end.

The Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the hostage situation at Larnaca Airport had ended via a succinct and simple message on Twitter:

Earlier President Nikos Anastasiades stressed that the hijack of the plane was not a terrorist act in the traditional sense of an individual acting on behalf of a known terrorist organisation or ideological party, but rather motivated by a personal matter.

Although those held captive in the aircraft won’t have felt any less terrorised or scared for their lives, Anastasiades was almost flippant in his media briefing, confirming that the individual who had commandeered the flight had done so for reasons relating to “a woman”.

Government Nikos Christodoulides later confirmed that the perpetrator – who has been confirmed as an Egyptian national – had been arrested and that he would be questioned to clarify the exact reasons for the hijack.
