Carry On legend Julian Holloway has died

Carry On legend Julian Holloway has died aged 80.

The actor was an icon of the Carry On film franchise, appearing in eight films between 1967 and 1976, including Carry On Camping and Carry On Up The Khyber as well as one of the Carry On Christmas TV specials.

He had a brief romance with Tessa Dahl in 1976 and the following year their daughter, the model Sophie Dahl, was born.

The 80-year-old was born into show-business royalty as the son of actor and comedian Stanley Holloway.

He was born in Watlington, Oxfordshire, in June 1944, and was educated at Ludgrove School, Harrow School, and later the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).

He began his career in 1961, featuring in an episode of The Avengers, before his first major acting role as Quentin in the 1962 TV season of Our Man Higgins – he played this character in four episodes.

He then quickly rose to fame as one of the mainstays in the Carry On film franchise, alongside the likes of Kenneth Williams and Charles Hawtrey before starring in an episode of police drama The Sweeney and had performances in a range of other shows.

He also developed a reputation as a successful voice actor, primarily in the US, and later performed as Captain Zed in Captain Zed and the Zee Zone.

voice featured in 55 of the 65 episodes of James Bond Jr., an animated American show based on the James Bond franchise.

He also voiced Siegfried Fischbacher in 2004’s Father of the Pride, and Prime Minister Almec in several episodes of the long running show Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

A host of actors and actresses paid tribute to him including Harry Potter actress Miriam Margolyes, who took to social media to pay tribute to the actor.

She wrote on Facebook: “Oh I am very sad. Wonderful man. Wishing you and all his family long life. Too many going.”

Author Morris Bright said: “Very sad to be told Julian Holloway has died aged 80. An accomplished actor who could play comedy as deftly as serious roles, from A Hard Day’s Night to Carry On and beyond. Son of Stanley Holloway whose OBE I was recently bequeathed. I shall look after it in both their memories.”

Meanwhile, Bad girls actress Stephanie Beacham, 77, said: “Dear dear person, kind and funny. One day he entertained my grandson in his swimming pool while I had to make some calls and helped dress and feed same two year old. A friend. Rest in peace Julian. You will be missed.”
