A mystery British gambler has reportedly placed a bet of $5 million on Donald Trump to win the US election, believed to be the biggest political wager in history.

The Sun claims the person behind the bet is a British businessman, who is based offshore and used a private bookmakers based in the Caribbean island of Curucao to place the bet.

He is said to have consulted people inside the Trump camp before placing the bet at odds of 2.85, which would return a staggering $15 million return should Trump retain the presidency.

A betting industry source told The Sun: “Word of this bet has done the rounds and we think it’s the biggest ever made on politics.”

The majority of late bets placed on the outcome of the election have backed a Trump victory, despite Joe Biden being ahead in the polls.

Jessica O’Reilly of Ladbrokes said: “Biden looks home and hosed according to the bookies and pollsters, but even at the eleventh hour punters are continuing to back Trump at the odds on offer.”

Paddy Power have also said that 93 per cent of bets placed in the last 24 hours have backed four more years of the Trump administration.

A different British gambler has also placed £1 million on Joe Biden to win, which would return approximately £1.46 million.

The outcome of this election is likely to come down to just a few swing states, most notable Texas and Florida, due to their voting power in the electoral college.
