At least two injured after explosion at German train station

Police released a statement

An unidentified object exploded near a train station in the city of Augsburg located in the south of Germany on Wednesday morning (2 August).

Police said that two people sustained minor injuries due to acoustic trauma after the incident which happened in a building passageway.

German tabloid Bild reported that a hand grenade had detonated in front of a Turkish jeweler.

Meanwhile, German newspaper Die Zeit identified the casualties as two Ukrainian citizens aged 17 and 18.

The explosion led to part of the station being closed off while police investigated the scene.

The Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper reported that the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) was on the scene with an explosive-disposal robot.

Police first responded to the incident at around 5am local time.

Augsburg is ​around 55 ‌kilometers (35 miles) west ​of ⁠Munich.

This comes as Police investigate a disruption at a power station in the town of Bergheim in western Germany, near Cologne. 

On Tuesday evening, several power lines failed following a short circuit at the power station. 

"Based on the current status of the investigation, we do not believe this was caused by a technical malfunction, but rather by a deliberate act, a criminal offense," a police spokesperson said on Wednesday morning.
