At least 13 people across Ukraine have been killed following a Russian missile and drone attack, in Tuesday’s early hours.
Among the dead, nine of them were from Dnipro and four from the capital, Kyiv.
As the overnight air strikes hit apartment blocks, dozens were also injured, including several children.
Emergency crews raced to find people feared trapped beneath rubble in Kyiv, as air raid warnings were in place across most of Ukraine.
According to Russia’s defence ministry, the strikes were a response to previous Ukrainian attacks, saying in a statement that it achieved all the “strike objectives”.
Last week, Russia warned it would launch “systematic strikes” as it accused Ukraine of a deadly attack on a student dormitory in an occupied part of eastern Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during a nightly video address on Monday warned that a “massive strike” was possible, as he urged his citizens to pay special attention to air raid alerts.
Zelenskyy said on Tuesday morning that in the overnight attack, Russia had launched 656 strike drones and 73 ballistic, cruise and anti-ship missiles.
