Each year, Fodor’s 'No List' highlights the places which suffer from popularity and are packed with tourists.
These places are definitely worthy of visiting, but they are facing their own issues due to overtourism.
Governments tend to prioritize visitor experiences over the well-being of local residents which then makes these places more expensive or even destroys them.
And visiting these places doesn’t make the travellers happy either.
What can make your experience as a tourist unenjoyable is not only walking around the packed cities but experiencing the way you are seen by the locals which aren’t all that happy about your presence there.
Meanwhile, there’s the issue of nature becoming littered with rubbish, which makes for a depressing experience altogether.
All these destinations, it must be said, are worthy of spending your money there, so they fully deserve the popularity and all the love.
However, they are facing genuine and urgent challenges.
Fodor’s doesn’t call for boycotting these places, but they advise that some of them need a break from the mass influx of tourists.
The list raises concerns regarding the places in which overtourism is placing a lot of pressure on the land and local communities.
The full Fodor’s list is as follows and the reason why they should be avoided:
Environmental concerns
Overtourism and local discontent
Ecological sustainability
Plans to build a massive port in the small Italian village
Balancing overtourism with the preservation of its environment and local quality of life
Anti-tourism sentiment with protests against gentrification, short-term rentals, and rising rents, with some demonstrations turning violent
Lack of understanding of how many tourists it can accommodate without harming ecological health
Overtourism
