Alec Baldwin: ‘Everybody who was there knows exactly who’s to blame’ for Halyna Hutchins’ death

Baldwin said the people “talking loudest” are those who weren’t on set

Alec Baldwin has said that “everybody” on the set of Rust knows “exactly who’s to blame” for the death of Halyna Hutchins.

Baldwin was rehearsing on the set of the film on October 21 2021 when a gun he was holding went off, shooting and killing Hutchins, a 42-year-old cinematographer.

He is being sued by Hutchins’ family for her death but has consistently denied any responsibility for the incident, and said he would “never point a gun at anyone and pull a trigger at them.”

But recent FBI findings concluded that the gun used in the incident “could not be made to fire without a pull of the trigger.”

The actor has now said that “every single person on the set of the film knows what happened.”

Speaking to the Chris Cuomo Project, he said: “I know that every single person on the set of the film knows what happened, and the people who are talking loudest about what happened or speculating about what happened were not on the set of the film.

“They are talking on and on and on about what if this and what if that and have dined out on this and the thing that they have in common is nobody was there.”

“Everybody who was there, they know exactly what happened. They know exactly who’s to blame.”

Baldwin went on to suggest that a process known as “fanning a gun” could have caused the shooting.

He explained: “If you pull the hammer back and you don’t lock the hammer, if you pull the hammer back pretty far, in old Western movies, you would see someone fan the hammer of the gun.

“The hammer didn’t lock, you pulled it back to an extent where it would fire the bullet without you pulling the trigger, without you locking the hammer.”

He repeated his assertion that he was told the gun was “cold” and safe to use.

“The man who is the principal safety officer of the set of the film declared the gun was safe when he handed it to me,” Baldwin said. “The man who was the principal safety officer of the film declared in front of the entire assemblage, ‘This is a cold gun.’

“Now, why did he say that if he didn’t know and hadn’t checked? The point is we were told everything was cool and you can relax and we are working with a gun that is safe to rehearse with.”

Initial court records following the incident showed that Baldwin had been told the gun had no ammunition in it.
