Sick and tired of lovey dovey tributes, couple selfies and 'in a relationship' tags on Facebook?

Well this should cheer you (and your low-key lover) right up. Turns out, couples who share every romantic gesture on social media may be simply be trying to paper over the cracks. A new study on the links between social media use and depression revealed an association between time spent on Facebook and depressive symptoms for both genders. Why? Well apparently, people tend to feel depressed after spending a great deal of time on Facebook because they feel badly when comparing themselves to others. People who live their lives offline (they do exist) are proven to be happier overall. Meanwhile, couples who consistently bombard their followers with romantic selfies could be feeling the pressure to compete with others in their network. The take away? Next time you're enjoying that sunset together, try an off-camera snog instead of a photograph and make a memory instead of a post.
