The mum even accused her son's fiancée of 'taking advantage' of the confession
A woman is calling off her wedding after her future mother-in-law confessed her son had cheated when she feared her his life was hanging in the balance.
The groom-to-be was in hospital fighting for his life after a car crash when his mum revealed his infidelity to confess his "sins" in case he never pulled through.
But he did.
The bride-to-be later called off the wedding, and has revealed her mother-in-law is accusing her of "taking advantage" of the confession she made in a moment of panic.
Despite kicking him out, her fiancé is now trying to win her back - and even her own parents don't really believe it's over.
Writing on Reddit, the unnamed woman, said she felt like a "horrible person" - but users flocked to support her, telling her she's dodged a bullet by calling it quits.
In her first post, shared before she wedding was canned, the woman told how the couple was meant to get married in a small ceremony, having been together for six years, engaged for one: "The best years of my life."
"He's brilliant in every way, or so I thought," she wrote, before detailing how the accident left her fiancé needing "hours and hours of surgery" while she and his family waited anxiously outside.
"His mum is (was) one of my favourite people and we got along very well. She was happy to have me as her first daughter (in law)," the woman wrote.
"She’s religious and when my fiancé was hovering between life and death she was worried about his sins so she told me that he cheated on me about 2 months ago with an ex he bumped into."
The woman said her beau's mum blamed the infidelity on the "stress" of planning the wedding.
"He had a weak moment, it was a one time thing and he regretted it so much," the woman wrote of her exchange with the mother.
And it turned out the man's parents had told him not to confess: "He asked his parents for advice on what to do and they told him not to say anything. As long as he’s remorseful and as long as it was me he wanted, he should forget about what he did and move on. His whole family knew."
The man moved back in with his parents after being discharged, and the woman chose not to reveal that she knew, visiting him every day to help his recovery.
She figured her fiancé's injuries would delay the wedding, giving her time to figure things out, but it didn't work out like that.
"Now both fiancé and his parents are talking about us being able to get married on the day we set after all. I feel awful because I don’t want that," the woman wrote.
"Our relationship was over the moment I found out about the cheating. I stayed because I loved (still do) him and I wanted him to feel better. I couldn’t break his heart while he’s recovering.
"I also thought the wedding was postponed and that I (we) would have more time for him to recover fully and be strong and independent again so I could leave with clear conscience."
Her fiancé's mother later told the woman she had "made a mistake" by revealing his secret and accused her of taking "advantage of what she said in desperation".
The woman ended the post by saying she was so angry she might "explode".
Returning to Reddit a few days later, she explained that she had spoken to her fiancé - and the drama wasn't over.
Her parents were paying for the wedding via their home insurance, she explained, and she hoped they could get a refund, and she could repay the rest.
And she still hadn't told her fiancé that she knew.
"Since my fiancé still lives with his parents I felt that I would be outnumbered if I went alone to end it," she wrote.
"Text or a call wasn’t an option since he meant a lot more to me than that and I really wanted to see his face and ask wtf!
"I also wanted him to see my hurt. I don’t want it to be comfortable for him. Cheaters must see the hurt they cause and hopefully learn from it."
She described how she went to tell him, accompanied by her own mum - and her fiancé immediately began begging.
"He told me all things they say in desperation. He was foolish. He didn’t think. He was stressed out. He was scared. It meant nothing. He regretted it.
"He didn’t want to tell me because it meant nothing and he didn’t want to hurt me. I should give him a chance to prove himself and his loyalty. He can ask his parents to pay for the wedding."
The poster said this conversation reduced her to tears after she left as she never got "a satisfying answer" for why he did it.
"I have cried myself to sleep every night since the accident and yet I cried like I’ve just found out," she wrote.
The woman resolved to remain living in the apartment she and her fiancé had just recently purchased together, with a view to selling at a later date.
Refusing to give in, she packed up his things, and said she planned to rent a van van to move all his things back to his parents' house.
"None of them (including my parents) believe that it’s really over and I don’t have the energy to prove my point either," she lamented.
"I just need some alone time now and some peace and quiet."
Despite both hers and her ex-fiancé's families seeming to see the issue as minor, or a hurdle to be overcome, many other Reddit users rushed to her defence.
One said: "Cheating is unacceptable, no matter the reason. Even if they fell in love with someone else, the right thing to do would be to break up before going further. Cheating is unfair and disgusting and no reason can change that."
Another commented: "He did it because he thought he could get away with it. Never even consider staying with a cheater. It's quite possible this wasn't the only time."
A third said said: "If his mom calls again, Do Not Answer. She is not responsible for this situation, her son is, and she needs to butt out of it."
Another added: "Mommy was afraid he was going to die so she tried to do his confessing for him. "It was weird and gross, and she tried to use his near death experience to manipulate OP into forgiving him for cheating he never even confessed to himself."
