But after the opening stages of their Champions League second leg against Paris Saint-Germain, their captain's absence from the heart of their defence was clearly felt.
Adrien Rabiot opened the scoring for the French champions after sixteen minutes, making the most of some poor Chelsea defending.
Unsurprisingly, Twitter was brutally honest in its assessment of Chelsea's attempt to prevent the opener.

But fortunately for the home side, Diego Costa breathed life into Chelsea's bid to 'do a 2012', levelling the scores with 27 minutes played.
