A doctor has urged gamers to manage their time while playing video games, warning it could result in unexpected side effects.
A recent report shows that over 70 per cent of people in the US find the time to play games on either PCs, consoles or mobile phones in 2024.
As people spend more time per week playing games than ever before, one doctor suggests that a severe gaming habit could lead to some unfortunate medical issues.
Doctor Ashwin Sharma says that by playing video games for more than five hours a day, men are more likely to report issues with erectile dysfunction.
Dr Sharma, who is a doctor for UK-based online pharmacy MedExpress said: “With any major game release, it’s common for gamers to spend extended hours sitting in front of screens. However, many may be unaware of the long-term impact a sedentary lifestyle can have on their overall health, particularly their sexual health.
“Prolonged sitting and lack of physical activity can negatively affect circulation and cardiovascular health, which are critical for maintaining sexual function.”
A 2016 study found that men who spent five hours or more ‘using TV/video or computers’ were almost three times more likely to report issues with ED, compared to those who spent less than an hour doing the same activity.
Sharma says lifestyle changes including increased exercise and healthier living are recommended for those affected, as well as taking regular breaks from gaming.
The study also mentions other important factors that can cause erectile dysfunction such as stress, alcoholism and drug use.
