One simple NHS app change could save you time at the pharmacy

Millions of people in England can now find out when their medication is ready without having to call their local pharmacy, thanks to a new notification feature in the NHS app.

The service sends alerts to users' phones and smartwatches when prescriptions are available for collection.

Patients who want to use the new feature can activate it by switching on notifications in their NHS app settings.

NHS England hopes the update will cut down on unnecessary calls and visits, while allowing pharmacy teams to spend less time answering queries and more time helping patients.

Health minister James Frith said the change was an example of technology making everyday NHS services more convenient.

“This is a practical example of how digital technology can make a difference to people’s everyday experience of the NHS, while also helping to reduce unnecessary calls and free up valuable time for pharmacy staff to focus on supporting patients,” he said.

Frith encouraged people who use the app to activate the feature, adding: “Anyone that uses the NHS app should switch on notifications so they can benefit from this brilliant new service.”

The Patients Association welcomed the change, highlighting how advance notice could prevent people from making unnecessary trips to collect prescriptions.

Chief executive Rachel Power said: “Making it easier for patients to know when their prescription is ready can save time and reduce unnecessary trips to the pharmacy.”

She also noted that patients had been asking for this type of service, but stressed that digital updates should sit alongside other ways of accessing help and information.

“It’s something many people have been asking for, and alongside other non-digital ways of accessing information and support, can help make it easier for patients to get the information they need in a way that works for them,” Power said.
