He went for scans after the match
Loris Karius’ Champions League final was one to forget. Two errors gifted Real Madrid two goals in their 3-1 win over Liverpool, who also had to deal with the loss of Mo Salah to injury in the opening half hour.
The Liverpool goalkeeper also took an elbow to the head from Sergio Ramos, which went unnoticed during the game but was subsequently picked up on by TV cameras and spread far and wide on social media.
It has now been revealed that Karius went to scans days after the final to check whether he had suffered from concussion as a result of the clash with Ramos.
Massachusetts General Hospital has since issued a statement confirming that Karius did suffer from concussion. The statement reads as follows:
On May 31, 2018 Mr. Karius underwent a comprehensive examination by Dr. Ross Zafonte and Dr. Lenore Herget in Boston at Massachusetts General Hospital and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.
After carefully reviewing game film and integrating a detailed history – including his reported present and immediate post-contact subjective symptoms – physical examination and objective metrics, we have concluded that Mr. Karius sustained a concussion during the match May 26, 2018.
It also states that “visual spatial dysfunction existed and likely occurred immediately following the event”, which may have played a contributing factor in Gareth Bale’s third goal of the game.
Karius has made “significant and steady improvement” and is expected to make a full recovery.
