Baby Guinness fans have been warned about a key ingredient in their drinks of choice.
It has become a popular drink for a night out even though it doesn’t contain Guinness products.
The drink, which is a mix of coffee liqueur and Irish cream, has an ingredient that you most likely didn’t know about, and which makes the 19% ABV drink not suitable to millions.
There is Kahlúa in it, which is common for alcoholic drinks that are coffee-flavored. But it has bone char filtration in it, and this includes animal byproducts.
That means that if you are a vegan or vegetarian, the drink is unsuitable for you.
And there are millions of vegans and vegetarian Brits, as the vegan population in UK sits at around 2-3% while vegetarians make up around 5-7%, YouGov research from 2022 indicates.
One of the sugar suppliers of Pernod Ricard, Kahlúa’s parent company, uses bone char filtration which decolourises and purifies the sugar.
“We can clarify that Kahlúa is not directly manufactured with any animal derivatives”, a spokesperson for Pernod Ricard said last year.
“However, it’s important to note that a bone char filtration process, which does involve contact with animal derivatives, is employed by one of our sugar suppliers during refinement”, he added.
“This widely accepted practice in the sugar industry currently prevents us from categorising Kahlúa as suitable for vegetarian and vegan diets.”
Meanwhile, Kahlúa also said its product is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans.
“We can confirm that Kahlúa is NOT suitable for vegetarians or vegans. This is because of the sugar refinement [process]”.
