Aldi forced to introduce two-bottle limit after slashing price of acclaimed wine to under £5

The supermarket giant is putting a stop to stockpiling.

Aldi have decided to set a two-bottle limit for its hugely popular Specially Selected Crémant De Loire between Christmas and New Year, after slashing the price of the sparkling wine to under £5.

From Friday 27 December to Tuesday 31 December, you’ll be able to pick up a bottle of the much sought-after tipple for just £4.99.

Scottish and Welsh customers, however, will not be able to purchase bottles for less than minimum unit pricing.

After warning it expects to see “unprecedented demand” following a glowing review by Jane MacQuitty, wine critic at The Times, the supermarket chain has elected to ration supplies of the wine.

MacQuitty, whose review last year led Aldi to run out of supplies of its own-label Côtes du Rhône in just four days, described Specially Selected Crémant De Loire as “the slashed-price steal of the season”.

“See you in the queue then for this awesome creamy, honey-flecked, quince and golden apple-fruited chenin blanc-based, sparky loire gem,” she wrote.

Julie Ashfield, MD of buying at Aldi UK, told The Grocer: “We want everyone to be able to raise a glass of quality wine this festive period, without breaking the bank.

“By lowering the price of our exquisite Crémant De Loire to just £4.99 and introducing a two-bottle limit, we’re ensuring more customers can experience this exceptional sparkling wine at an unbelievable price.”

Earlier this month, Aldi brought back its ‘when it’s gone it’s gone’ Côtes du Rhône deal for a second year.

Between 2 and 8 December, it reduced the price of its Specially Selected French Cairanne from £8.49 to just £3.49.

Last week, they announced a huge reduction in their ‘classic veggies’, just days before Christmas.

They’re offering the chance to pick up parsnips, broccoli, carrots, brussel sprouts, white potatoes and cabbage in stores at a reduced price of just 8p each.

The bargains will help countless households across the UK put on their Christmas Day dinner for less this year.
