Gen Z rebrands ‘wife beaters’ to ‘wife pleasers’ to make it less triggering

A website is even listing ‘the best wife pleasers of the summer’.

Made famous by Paul Newman, Marlon Brando, and Robbie Williams, the white vest has undergone a rebrand, from ‘wife beater’ to ‘wife pleaser’.

The reason for doing so is very understandable, to make it less triggering for the victims of family violence.

The rebrand comes as more and more people are incorporating the white vest back into their wardrobes and some websites are now even listing the ‘best wife pleasers of the summer’.

Back in 2018, Moises Velasquez-Manoff wrote an opinion piece headlined: “Are we really still calling this shirt a wife beater?”

The piece, which was written for the New York Times, read: “I myself have used the term before — and I’ve worn the shirt plenty — but this time it stopped me cold. Given the torrent of revelations of abuse against women in the #MeToo era, the name suddenly seemed grossly inappropriate.

“We don’t call our pants ‘child molesters’ or our hats ‘cat mutilators’. We immediately recognise such descriptions as violent and abhorrent. And yet, we somehow overlook the same when we call our shirts wife beaters.”

Velasquez-Manoff concluded: “But must we be so oblivious to the meaning of what we’re saying? Why not call the shirt a “Brando” or a “Wolverine” instead? It’s time to retire ‘wife beater’.”

Well now, Velasquez-Manoff can sleep easy, as it appears that wife pleaser is the future, and the future is nigh.
